Chores your kids can do over the summer

Children can help with chores, even at a young age. They love to be independent and to have responsibilities. When kids have chores, they feel important, learn life skills, and it helps the household. There are studies that show that kids who have chores at home actually have a better work ethic when they’re older. 🙌🏻

Ages 2-3 years old
✅ Brush their teeth
✅ Pick up blankets & pillows
✅ Put toys away
✅ Put dirty clothes in the hamper
✅ Mop small areas with a dry mop
✅ Sort small collections of items

Ages 3-4 years old
✅ Straighten bed & blankets
✅ Put dirty clothes in the hamper
✅ Pick outfit for the next day
✅ Match socks together
✅ Throw away trash
✅ Put books on the bookshelf
✅ Pick up items off the floor
✅ Carry the plate to the sink after meals
✅ Dust the home with a sock on their hand
✅ Help wipe up spills

Ages 5-6 years old
✅ Make bed with help
✅ Put dirty clothes in the hamper & bring to the laundry room
✅ Hang towel after a bath
✅ Load and unload the dishwasher with help
✅ Clear the table after meals
✅ Sweep the kitchen floor
✅ Set the table with help
✅ Carry in light groceries
✅ Put shoes where they belong
✅ Dust the baseboards
✅ Clean out anything from under the bed
✅ Pull weeds in the yard
✅ Put groceries away with help
✅ Bring their items & trash in from the car
✅ Give the animals water

Ages 7-8 years old
✅ Make the bed
✅ Help with laundry and sort by colors
✅ Load & unload the dishwasher
✅ Help prep meals
✅ Pack lunch with help
✅ Sweep & vacuum the house
✅ Mop the floor
✅ Clean out the car
✅ Organize toys
✅ Collect the trash from the trash bins in the house
✅ Give the animals water & food
✅ Write simple thank you notes
✅ Clean their bedroom
✅ Check the mail & bring in packages

Ages 9+
✅ Make the bed & change the sheets
✅ Wash & dry loads of laundry
✅ Cook meals
✅ Take out the trash & bring bins to the curb
✅ Clean the floors & counters
✅ Pack lunches
✅ Make a grocery list
✅ Feed the animals & walk pets
✅ Clean the bathrooms
✅ Write thank you notes & letters
✅ Clean mirrors and windows
✅ Open packages & break down boxes
✅ Fold towels
✅ Declutter toys
✅ Water the plants
✅ Hand wash pots & pans
✅ Help wash the car
✅ Make breakfast & snacks
✅ Pack for trips

As your kids get older, their responsibilities around the house should build too. Your children learn skills through chores that will help them with cooking, cleaning, organizing, and maintaining a home. The benefits of chores also include relieving stress and bringing a sense of calm to the nervous system. Chores not only help you but they help your kids too!
